Why Animals Have Always Been My Family

When I was six years old, my father left, and my world changed overnight. I found myself on my grandparents' farm — and it was there, surrounded by animals, that I found comfort, loyalty, and love I could count on.

There was Pet, a calf pulled from a frozen ditch and raised with pure determination. There was Buster, who had a habit of headbutting my grandma and made us laugh every time. There was Violet, a Shetland pony rescued from an underground coal mine, whose colt was so full of spirit he thought he was a dog — chasing the school bus every single morning. And there was Quack, our beloved pet duck.

Those animals taught me something I've carried my whole life: pets don't judge, they don't leave, and they love you unconditionally.
